A topic that is long overdue. I'm sure not many articles address this issue, so I thought I'd share my opinion on the matter.
The question does not pose any difficulties, since I have 16 years of experience in this field, of which 11 years are professional activities. Today, an SEO specialist not only deals with internal and external website optimization, but also works to increase conversion, performs the tasks of an Internet marketer, sometimes takes on the functions of a director, and others. It’s rare to find specialists who exclusively focus on SEO. Typically, they combine several roles, especially in small agencies or as freelancers.
And this is where the difficulty arises: if a specialist multitasks, he is perceived as a “generalist,” which in the eyes of many advertisers means a handyman. As a rule, such a position is not highly rated, and the salary level is often lower than expected. Don’t forget about price dumping on the part of freelancers and large agencies that offer services at too low a price. For example, promoting a medical website can cost much more than what such companies offer, creating unrealistic expectations among clients.
This is why many companies I have worked with are either not ready to invest in SEO or underestimate the importance of quality promotion.
This question is not difficult to answer, since I myself work closely with programmers and know how important their contribution is to creating websites and working on the Internet. I am clarifying the term “web programmer” so that we are talking only about those specialists who create and support web resources. These programmers perform tasks related to the technical part of sites, and their work is always rated higher than the work of SEO specialists. Why? It's simple - the results of their work are easy to notice and check.
Programmers are also often undervalued in terms of salary, but still earn more than SEO specialists. In fact, the process of SEO promotion is much more complex. It requires constant data analysis, monitoring competitors, studying search engine algorithms and implementing all this knowledge on the site, which ultimately depends on other specialists. That is, an SEO specialist actually manages a team, including programmers. However, despite this, in practice we often see that programmers' salaries are higher than those of SEO specialists, although their work does not require such a variety of skills.
When I worked at one company, I had a fellow programmer who always said: “Tell me what you need, and I’ll do it.” Indeed, the programmer performed only his tasks, and I, as an SEO specialist, did the rest. But if you look at vacancies on popular sites, you will see that the salaries of SEO specialists often do not exceed 40-60 thousand rubles per month, while web programmers receive 20-30 thousand more, and this is not uncommon. Experience and knowledge in programming are highly valued.
The SEO profession is often undervalued. There are too many cheap and incompetent specialists, which leads to underpricing of SEO services. At the same time, web programmers are rated higher simply because the results of their work are easier to check and see immediately.
