Every year the struggle to get to the top of search results becomes more cruel and senseless. Or does it still make sense? Who knows when SEO and SEO copywriting as part of it will finally disappear?
The history of website promotion began with the advent of the first search engines, which replaced the old website directories. Many no longer remember that in the early 90s it was website directories that were the main way to search for information on the Internet, especially on the Runet.
As soon as the first specialists appeared who learned to manipulate search results, the first sanctions began to be introduced. Over these 20-25 years, the Cyrillic Internet has gone through many changes. Many companies have lost huge budgets by trusting less than professional SEO specialists, and the SEO industry itself has undergone many changes. Here are a few steps that I remember:
Let's pay attention to the last point. Link ranking, based on the analysis of the quantity and quality of links, has helped Google become a world leader. This method was similar to the principle by which scientists evaluate the importance of work by the number of citations in scientific articles. However, with the development of purchased links, this method has lost its effectiveness.
The abolition of TIC and PageRank, the introduction of filters and sanctions for purchased links became a turning point for the entire SEO industry. Instead of buying links, it is now important to develop quality content. And this has become much more difficult and less effective.
And here’s what’s interesting: over 20 years, the Internet audience has grown hundreds of times, but the effect of getting to the top of search engines has increased far from proportionately. On the contrary, we can talk about a drop in efficiency. This trend continues to gain momentum.
The reason for the decline in organic search results is obvious: money. Large search engines such as Yandex continue to increase their capitalization, offering more and more of their own services. Every year the number of services that are part of the search engine ecosystem is only growing.
And search engines do everything to ensure that companies and website owners spend money not on SEO optimization, but on promotion through their paid services. For example, if you want to take top positions in the search, you will be offered to use contextual advertising. Payment will be instant, and results will appear much faster than from traditional SEO.
The search is increasingly filled with advertising units, services and products belonging to the search engine itself, taking away space from quality sites every day. Yandex is actively replacing the Internet, providing answers to all questions without leading the user to external sites. We are approaching the moment when the first place in organic results may disappear from the first page altogether, giving way to contextual advertising and other tools of the search giants.
I can't say that I'm happy with the current situation. Of course, it’s better to see high-budget sites with honest SEO in the first places than to order another advertising service or end up in Yandex.News, Yandex.Maps and other services that literally “capture” the screen.
But there is also a positive point - that 15 years ago I said that the future lies in quality content, and not in manipulating search engine algorithms. Texts based on analytics and copying leading sites lose their effectiveness with each update of search engine algorithms. SEO copywriting as we knew it is a thing of the past. But if you create interesting and useful content, it will work, and SEO will also bring results. This is modern SEO copywriting.
