A search query is the words and phrases that we enter into search engines such as Yandex or Google to find the necessary information or service.
Queries can be of two types: geo-dependent and geo-independent.
Most often, location-based queries are associated with commercial services that are tied to a specific location, such as an address or city.
A geo-dependent request includes an indication of a location - a city, district, or even a specific address. Examples of such queries: “Website promotion in Moscow”, “Buy an apartment in Yekaterinburg”, “Hairdressing salon in Tula”, “Cafe in the city center”, “Car service on Leninsky Prospekt” and the like.
If the query does not contain an exact location, but you are looking for a commercial service, the search engine will default to showing results from your city. For example, if you are in Kazan and search for “Cafe”, “Massage salon” or “Car service”, search engines will offer websites of companies from Kazan, and not from other cities, such as Omsk or Vladivostok.
An interesting point: sometimes, when I was preparing materials for this article, it turned out that the first positions in search results were services and aggregators that collect information about companies. This is convenient for users - they can quickly see nearby organizations on the map, read reviews and find out contact information. But for website owners, this may mean that their sites will be far from the top positions, which means they will have to invest in advertising.
However, don't despair. For queries with low frequency, there are still chances for promotion!
Geo-independent queries are usually informational and do not depend on the user's location. For example, “Borscht recipe”, “How to learn to draw” or “How to choose a laptop” - such queries may be relevant for users throughout the country.
Additionally, geo-aware queries include popular queries such as names of famous people or brands, such as “Pushkin's poems,” “Battle of Stalingrad,” or “How to become an entrepreneur.” In any city, the results for such queries will be the same.
Thus, the difference between location-based and location-independent queries is of great importance to SEO strategies because it affects how to optimize a site for different types of audiences.
