Tools for fast query clustering in SEO

In one of the previous articles, I explained what query clustering is - this is the process of grouping queries into the TOP 10. This process is important in order to understand which pages on the site should be promoted for which queries.

Now let's look at several services that will help you quickly cluster queries.

Let's say we have a list of 400 queries for an online bicycle store. We need to distribute them across the pages of the site, and also get rid of untargeted or unnecessary queries, for example, such as “riding a bicycle” or “ride a bicycle”, which are not suitable for promotion.

Clustering services

1. A free service that allows you to cluster up to 500 requests at a time. It analyzes requests for the TOP-10 Yandex.

2. Paid service that allows you to cluster up to 100 requests. It also works with both Yandex and Google.

3. Paid service without limiting the number of requests, with the possibility of clustering by Yandex and Google. It also supports customization of query language and countries.

Clustering settings

Clustering threshold (clustering degree/accuracy)

This parameter varies from 1 to 10 and shows how many identical pages for queries must be in the TOP 10 in order for the queries to fall into one cluster.

If you select "1", the service will combine requests into one cluster if at least one page from the TOP 10 matches. If you select "3", then to combine queries you will need at least three identical pages in the TOP 10.

In general, it is recommended to use a threshold of "3" to obtain more accurate results.

Clustering method

There are two clustering methods: Soft and Hard.

With Soft clustering, the most frequent request is selected, and the remaining requests are attached to it if at least one URL in the TOP 10 matches the URL of this marker request.

With Hard clustering, requests are combined into one cluster only if all URLs in the TOP 10 for each request match the URLs for all other requests in the group.

Thus, the Soft method is less strict than the Hard method, since merging requests only requires a URL match with one marker request, rather than with every request in the group.

Which clustering settings to choose

Which clustering method to choose depends on your tasks. I recommend experimenting by running requests through different services with different clustering methods and thresholds to understand which option is right for your site.

Clustering example

For example, let's run requests on the topic of bicycles through one of the services. We select the Moscow region and set the clustering threshold to “3”. We insert requests (up to 500 pieces).

After clustering is completed, the service groups requests and shows which pages will need to be promoted.

In addition, the service helps to highlight non-target requests that are not suitable for promotion. These requests will be easy to notice because they will end up in separate groups.

Bottom line

Clustering is the grouping of queries into the TOP 10, taking into account common URLs in search results. There are two clustering methods: Soft and Hard, as well as the ability to configure the clustering threshold. A free service that solves most clustering problems is a good place to start.
