The story of how we met an SEO magician and what was the result of his SEO magic.

It may seem that SEO is a boring job, but in practice there are times when it turns into real challenges, like in a quest or in the fight against dark forces. We will tell you about such a case.

We have been engaged in SEO optimization of the website of a residential complex for several months. The results suited us: good conversion, stable sales - everything went as expected. But suddenly a mysterious SEO specialist approached our client and said that in a couple of months he would bring 90% of key phrases to the first positions of search engines. It was clear that the client was interested in this. The fish looks for where it is deeper, but man, in turn, always looks for where it is better. On the one hand, we felt anxiety, on the other, curiosity arose. We proposed holding a video conference where we could discuss approaches to promotion and the results of our SEO work. We presented graphs and reports that clearly showed how our work increased site traffic and improved conversion, and therefore sales.

The client listened carefully, everything seemed logical. But then the mysterious SEO magician himself joined the conversation. Our entire team sat down closer to the screen, because behind him hung a tambourine - not musical, but almost shamanic, covered in leather.

We continued the conversation, and this is how it went:

- I know ways to get 90% of key phrases into the TOP 10 search engines for any site. These are not just methods, but real SEO magic.

- Can you explain exactly what key phrases we are talking about? You probably mean queries that include the name of the residential complex or developer?

- No, we are talking about commercial requests, such as “buy an apartment in this area” (without mentioning the name of the residential complex). I can bring them to the TOP 10 in 2-3 months.

- Can you give examples or cases that confirm the effectiveness of your methods?

- I brought all the sites that I promote to the TOP 10.

After that, we tried to find out what exactly underlies his SEO magic, but the interlocutor skillfully avoided specific answers, giving only general phrases. As a result, we managed to find out that he was currently working with the website of a residential complex that we once did. We asked for a report on the promotion of this site. The answer was: “No problem, I’ll do it soon.”

Neither a week nor two weeks later the report was provided.

Two months passed, and we had already begun to forget about that conversation, but the story continued...

Our client called and said that after much thought, he decided to try SEO magic and sign a contract with this specialist for two months. He sent an agreement that included 100 key phrases that did not contain branded queries. The cost of the work was 50% higher than ours. All our attempts to dissuade the client from this step were unsuccessful. We argued that there is not a single successful example of working with this SEO magician, that a report on the site has not yet been received, and we analyzed the site itself that he promotes - there was only metadata, and not on all pages. There was no content, image optimization, link purchases, and for commercial requests the site was not even in the TOP 10. But despite this, the contract was signed. We agreed to provide technical support, because we ourselves were curious what would come of it.

And so the miracle did not happen. We watched as an SEO magician recruited an army of bots to drive traffic to the site (up to 80% of all visits were bots). He tried with all his might to bring out at least half of the positions promised in the TOP 10. The problem was that as soon as the purchase of bots stopped, positions immediately fell. Traffic did not grow, while competitors in the market increased sales by 2 and sometimes 3 times. We knew this for sure, since we ourselves worked with the two main competitors of this residential complex.

We waited not two months, but three whole months... Here's what happened in the end:

Out of 100 key phrases, only 25 made it into the TOP 10 search engines; traffic grew by only 22%, while for competitors in the same period it increased by more than 35%. But the most important thing is that the conversion rate has dropped by half.

It was a fiasco. The magic broth clearly lacked the necessary ingredients.

As a result, we prepared a report in which we compared our SEO work over the past three months with the results of SEO magic. According to our report, in three months we promoted 45 key phrases versus 25, increased traffic by 98% compared to 22% for magicians, and our conversion rate was 0.73%, while theirs was only 0.39%. .

Now guess how this story ends? Here are three options:

1) We started working together with an SEO magician, believing that the magic did not work due to the peculiarities of the site, and we had to improve its technical part.

2) The SEO magician continued his work, claiming that our work was interfering with him, and everything would work out without us.

3) We continue to engage in SEO promotion because the evidence is too convincing.
