The origins of SEO in Russia: from primitive spam to modern promotion

With great interest, I listened to the stories of senior colleagues about what SEO work was like in “those days.” When there was little information and everything could be mastered in a couple of weeks. It was possible to promote websites with minimal knowledge and only a drop of common sense. Let's go back to that era.

Today we will go on an exciting journey through the history of the SEO profession. Let's find out what this work was like several decades ago. After all, the history of this direction began much earlier than many might assume.

Since the advent of the first search engines in the late 90s, the profession of SEO specialist began to take shape. At a time when the Internet was just beginning to develop, the work of an SEO specialist was mainly limited to technical optimization of sites, setting up meta tags and filling sites with keyword-rich content. This was an era when to promote websites it was enough to be able to work with and understand the basics of search engine ranking algorithms. Therefore, spamming was a common practice. And even today, on the fringes of the Internet you can find examples of spam sites. Now imagine that a modern designer found himself in 1996 - he would simply rejoice at all those fonts that were then considered real art.

Back then, SEO specialists were sort of Internet wizards. They possessed knowledge that was inaccessible to most users, and could charge impressive fees for their services. At the dawn of the 2000s, there was no clear division between “white hat” and “black hat” SEO methods - everything was mixed, and experts acted by trial and error.

Some performers could charge a large amount from the client, spend part of it on buying links, and keep the rest for themselves. That was the margin! Give me back those years! I was in school then and still didn’t know anything about the Internet. These were times when SEO was a land of wild and ruthless experimentation, where the boldest survived. It was at this time that one of the most famous SEO blogs appeared, which is actively developing to this day. I'm glad this blog continues to grow and bring quality content.

But what has changed over the years?

Today, SEO is not just a profession, but an entire industry based on analytics, research and strategy development. Every year, search algorithms become more and more complex, and achieving high positions in search results requires much more knowledge and effort. New technologies have appeared, such as neural networks, which I use daily both in work and in life. And although the topic may be a little quiet, neural networks continue to be in demand, as they significantly simplify tasks.

Today, I am proud to have become an expert in the field of SEO, which is evolving every second. Every day I learn something new by communicating with colleagues and studying new techniques.

And although the SEO profession has undergone significant changes and has become more complex and responsible, one thing remains unchanged - we continue to help people find the information they need in this vast world of the Internet.

But the most important thing is that we help clients receive a stable flow of visitors, those who understand how important it is to work on the site. After all, having a website is only half the battle; it must make a profit. I just hope that the number of charlatans will decrease, both among performers and among customers.
