Special offer block - the same text on all pages, how to make it better for SEO

Recommendation blocks often display identical products or objects, and this can cause a problem with duplicates. What to do in this case?

The article addresses the question of one of the subscribers who is interested in: “On each page of the site there are blocks “Special offers” and “Similar objects”. And these blocks contain the same products with the same texts. I don't want to remove these blocks, but the Screaming Frog system marks them as duplicates. How to deal with this?

The solution to this issue is to make the “Special Offers” and “Similar Products” blocks unique for each page. It should not just be the same content on all pages, but each block should be selected taking into account the specifics of the page.

How to choose the right products for recommendation blocks

Let's say you have products with different characteristics, such as size and color. In the “Similar Products” block, products of the same color and size should be shown first. If there are no suitable products, then half of the objects must match in color, and the other half in size.

When it comes to “Special Offers”, the task becomes a little more complicated: the selection should be not only by color and size, but also taking into account the relevance of the promotions. That is, products with suitable characteristics, but without discounts, should not be included in this block. As a result, the products in the “Similar Products” block will be more diverse, which will reduce the likelihood of duplicates on different pages.

If you have pages that aren't indexed by search engines or are flagged as being of little use, the problem may be that you don't have enough unique content. Then you need to supplement these pages with unique blocks such as “Special Offers” and “Similar Products” to make them more valuable to search engines. This will increase the likelihood of them being indexed and improve their ranking.

If blocks of recommendations are still repeated on several pages, don’t worry. However, if there are too many such repetitions, then the mixing method can be used. For example, if you have 50 products that match the characteristics of a page, you could show 5 random products from that selection (e.g. 1, 10, 18, 21, 48) on one page, and other products on another page, e.g. 2, 13 and so on. This way, the recommendations will be unique every time you visit the page.

What is better - a fixed list of products or updated ones? There is no clear answer to this question, since both methods have their pros and cons. Keeping the products in your recommendation boxes constantly updated can help your site get more attention from search engines because it will appear as if the site is being updated regularly. However, it is worth remembering that frequently updated blocks can cause problems with your crawling budget. If there are many such pages on a site, search engines may spend more time crawling them, which will slow down indexing. Therefore, it is important to consider how often the product range on your website is updated. If updates happen frequently and a lot of items go out of stock, you may want to avoid frequently updated recommendations.
