WordPress continues to occupy a leading position among content management systems (CMS) on the Russian Internet, despite the presence of many competitors. The simplicity and ease of use of this platform are revealed only to those who understand all the intricacies of setting up and optimizing sites for search engines.
By default, the WordPress source code is not always optimized for SEO, since it lacks human-readable URLs and may contain duplicate pages and other errors. These problems can be eliminated by installing an SEO-friendly template, which should contain the following important features:
Initial setup includes specifying the name of the site, its brief description, address for administrators, and setting the time and date. These parameters can be set in the "General Settings" tab.
The main mirror of the site must be specified correctly, since it will participate in search indexing. From other addresses (for example, subdomains) you need to configure 301 redirects. It is important that access to the site is possible only through one main mirror. This mirror should also be indicated in the webmaster toolbar.
Recommended steps to configure the mirror:
Also in the settings you need to specify an e-mail to receive notifications about various events on the site, for example, about new comments or applications.
In the Membership section, you select a role for the new user. By default, this role is "Subscriber", but depending on the purpose of the site, you can choose other options such as "Author", "Editor", "Administrator", and so on.
CNC is the address of the page, which plays an important role in search engine optimization, as it can help the user understand what the page is about and improve its ranking in search results. By default, WordPress creates a simple address, which is not always informative. To optimize CNC, you need to go to the "Permanent Links" section and select the appropriate format, for example, "Custom" or "Post Name". The "Custom" option is convenient for blogs, as it allows you to combine different elements to form a URL.
If the site is not yet ready for full indexing, it can be closed from search engines. To do this, in the “Reading” section you need to activate the option that hides the site from search engines. When the site is ready, you can disable this option and start indexing, which will increase the chance of getting into search engine results.
This tool is useful for sites that regularly update content, such as news portals. In the settings, you need to select ping services that will notify search engines about updates.
The robots.txt file regulates the indexing of site pages. It can be created manually or using SEO plugins. If you decide to do this manually, you need to upload the file to the root directory of the site, which will require access to the hosting.
At the moment, Host directives are no longer used, but a link to the XML map remains required. There are several tools you can use to create an XML sitemap:
If several SiteMaps files are created, their addresses are indicated in the directive.
Optimizing images helps improve site loading speed and allows images to be indexed in search engines. Images should not be too large - the optimal size is no more than 800x1024 pixels and weight - up to 100 KB. To compress images, you can use various tools, such as special plugins for WordPress. It is also worth taking care of the correct file names and filling out the alt and title attributes.
There are many useful plugins available to help you perform basic SEO tasks on WordPress. Some of them:
