SEO: Do-it-yourself technical website audit in 10 minutes!

In this article we will look at how you can independently identify the main technical errors on the site. Among them:

  • Errors in Title
  • Errors in h1-h2 headers
  • Errors in description
  • Broken links and 301 redirects
  • Insufficient weight of promoted pages
  • External links to other resources

For this we need:

  • SEO audit program
  • Basic knowledge of English

First of all, enter the URL of our site into the selected analysis program and click “Start”. We expect results from 30 seconds to several minutes, depending on the size of the site.

As an example, let’s take a site from the TOP-50 for the request “Apartment renovation”.

Errors Title

For analysis, go to the section related to Page Titles. On the left we set up filters:

  • Missing - pages that do not have a Title;
  • Duplicate - pages with the same Title;
  • Below 30 characters - pages with Title less than 30 characters;
  • Same as H1 - pages where the Title matches h1;
  • Multiple - pages with several Titles (this is rare, but it happens).

Errors h1-h2

Go to the h1 tab and set up filters:

  • Missing - pages that do not have h1;
  • Duplicate - pages with duplicate h1;
  • Over 70 characters - pages with an h1 longer than 70 characters;
  • Multiple - pages where several h1 are used.

Then go to the h2 tab and check:

  • Duplicate - pages with duplicate h2;
  • Over 70 characters - pages where h2 is longer than 70 characters.

Errors Description

Now let's move on to the Meta Description section. Finding filters:

  • Missing - pages where the description is missing or incomplete;
  • Duplicate - pages with the same description;
  • Over 155 characters - pages with a long description (up to 160 characters are suitable for Google, the rest will not be included in the snippet);
  • Below 70 characters - pages with a short description;
  • Multiple - pages with several descriptions.

Broken links and 301 redirects

Let's go to the section where Response Codes are displayed. We need to pay attention to the following filters:

  • No response - pages that do not send a response code;
  • Redirection (3xx) - pages with redirect codes (3xx);
  • Client error (4xx) — pages with client errors (4xx);
  • Server error (5xx) — pages with server errors (5xx).

Where can I find links to these pages?

To do this, go to the bottom of the window and select the Inlinks tab. In the From column you will see a list of incoming links.

Insufficient weight of promoted pages

Page weights are more important for Google, but also play a role for Yandex.

For analysis, go to the Internal section and sort the pages by the number of incoming links (Inlinks). Pages with high-frequency queries should have a maximum number of incoming links, pages with medium-frequency queries should have at least 40-50% of links, and pages with low-frequency queries can have 1-3 links.

External links to other resources

When we provide external links to other sites, our site "gives away" some of its weight. Sometimes we may not even be aware of it.

The following cases are exceptions:

  • Links to authoritative sources, such as major news resources or Wikipedia pages;
  • Links to social networks (for example, official company pages);
  • Links to various services (for example, Yandex.Metrica, external widgets, etc.).

To find such links, you need to go to the External tab and look for the so-called “parasitic links”.

That's certainly not all...

At a minimum, it’s worth checking the site’s loading speed using online services:

  • http://gtmeter.com/
  • http://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insignts/?hl=ru

It is also useful to check the site for validation errors using:

http://validator.vz.org/

However, this is only 80% of the work...
