Keyword-Driven SEO vs Topic-Driven SEO

We bring clients from Yandex and Google. Write to me!

I've been working in SEO and creating content since before it was so popular. Many of my articles are topic-focused rather than keyword-focused. And these articles are successful, they attract attention and generate leads.

How are topic-focused articles different from SEO-focused articles?

  • Thematic content (focus on readers).
  • Keyword-focused content (focus on rankings).

With SEO optimized content, everything seems obvious. You need to collect keywords, write the required number of pages, optimize them to the requirements of search engines and wait for the result. We create these “lead machines” for our clients every day.

But what about topic-driven content?

Developing Topic-Driven Content

You come up with an idea that you think might be interesting to your audience. Perhaps the idea came to mind by chance, or arose during a conversation with a client. And it could make a good article.

You can already imagine what discussions and reactions it will cause!

  • Pros: the article is focused on the interests of the audience. She has a greater chance of becoming an opinion leader, generating responses and discussions. The likelihood that an article will become popular on social networks and in newsletters is much higher.
  • Cons: limited traffic. Smaller audience and low brand awareness.

As you can see, there are pros and cons. But what to do? Of course, write!

Are people searching for this topic?

People search for many different things, but not all topics receive equal attention. Some content formats are outside the focus of SEO. Here are some examples:

  • News and announcements.
  • Opinions, editorials, new ideas.
  • Interviews and reviews.

The question is, is your audience searching for this on search engines? Think about what phrase will lead to your article.

There are topics that are consistently searched for. This is the so-called evergreen content, which attracts a constant flow of new visitors. Examples:

  • Articles with practical recommendations and experience (instructions).
  • Answers to frequently asked questions.
  • Strategies, comparisons, research.

Have questions about this topic? Write to me!

We are still writing the article!

You understand that promoting your feature article through SEO can be difficult since there are no obvious search terms for it. But it's not scary!

You have an audience focus, are passionate about the topic, and know there are many ways to drive traffic beyond standard SEO. Here are some ideas:

  • Promote the article through social networks.
  • Send the article to your email database.
  • Collaborate with opinion leaders to promote the article.
  • Distribute a link to the article among clients, if appropriate.
  • Use a link to the article in other articles on the site.
  • Discuss the article on webinars, guest posts, presentations, podcasts and other platforms.

Forget about keywords. Stop counting characters, words and keys. Just write what you think is important.

Some authors don't realize that online promotion is an all-or-nothing game.

Ultimately, you can skip SEO altogether and enjoy the writing process. Imagine how your reader will appreciate quality content!

This article was created with a “topic first” approach. It is not optimized for search engines, and may not receive much traffic through search engines.
