How I became an SEO specialist

Univer

I studied to become an engineer at a technical university, choosing a specialty in mechatronics and robotics. I admit that I was not too sure about my choice. At that time, I could enroll in both the humanities and technical faculties, because the results of the Unified State Exam allowed me to get into even prestigious educational institutions. However, I was not very interested in studying, and I approached this process with minimal motivation.

Later, I decided to continue my master's studies, choosing information security.

Factory

Over time, I had to leave the university due to poor performance. At the same time, I got a job at a factory, but the work did not satisfy me at all. Every day was the same: boring tasks, a large number of elderly employees, difficult morning rises and inadequate management. I began to think more and more about changing my career, watched inspiring videos on YouTube and looked for ways to change.

That's when I learned about SEO. At first I was interested in the context, but then I chose SEO because it is a combination of marketing and technical work, the opportunity to work remotely and freelance. Working remotely, you can earn money at your own discretion, which really attracted me.

Preparation

  • I started reading literature on SEO and became familiar with the basics of the profession.
  • I responded to the vacancy and received a test task, which included developing queries for a website page, writing h1, title and description, as well as recommendations for improving the page.
  • After completing the test task, they called me and the interviews began. There were three of them, and at each one I was carefully studied.

At that moment, I was a beginner, so they assessed not only my technical skills, but also my personal qualities: how I think, how creative I am, what my values are.

After the interviews, HR called me and told me that I was hired.

Getting started

As a newbie, I was hired as an assistant SEO specialist, and on the first day I left the factory. Colleagues at the plant did not believe in me and said that it was pointless to do something not “serious” like Internet marketing.

I set a goal for myself: in 2-3 years, I will learn and switch to freelancing, where I can work directly with clients and earn much more. Then my goal was to earn 150 thousand rubles a month.

Within a few months, I became a full-fledged SEO specialist. My tasks were 20 projects, which I led under full responsibility.

Online schools

A couple of years later, a friend of mine, the head of a large online school, suggested that I record a course on SEO for their students. To do this, I needed to deepen my knowledge, as I felt unsure of my abilities.

I spent a lot of time studying the materials, consulting with colleagues, and ultimately prepared a high-quality course. Since then he has continued to train students and more than 2,000 people have completed the course.

Freelancing

After taking an online course and gaining more experience, I realized that I wanted to work for myself. I didn’t like working in an office every day, so I decided that I would look for freelance projects to have more freedom and earn more.

However, I encountered difficulties: how to find clients? How to prove your expertise? How to correctly set the cost of your services?

Over time, I learned how to communicate with clients, sell my services and manage projects effectively. At one point I was managing up to 30 projects simultaneously. This was labor-intensive and ineffective, because the quality of work suffered.

Another online school

When I reached the stage of burnout, another large online school approached me with an offer to create a course for more experienced SEO specialists. This was a new challenge for me because I felt that I did not have enough experience to create such a course. However, I accepted the offer and tried to deepen my knowledge in order to prepare a high-level course.

Burnout and career change

Five years into the job, I began to feel severe burnout. At the same time, I was most interested in the topic of online education. I decided to change my profession and became an online course producer.

I worked for a web design course company and developed several courses over the course of a year. I learned how to create courses that are not only interesting, but also meet the needs of the target audience.

After a year, I realized that I wanted to continue working for myself, so I started developing my own course.
