I don’t want to repeat myself, as I already wrote in the first article “Why it is impossible to find an SEO specialist to work on staff for 60k rubles.” Today I want to tell you about how companies usually look for SEO specialists.
This text will be useful both for SEO specialists and for employers, to whom this post is primarily addressed.
Marina, who does not understand SEO at all, begins to actively search for information in search engines. She types a query like “Site promotion is a set of measures to ensure site traffic to target visitors...” - and, horror of horrors, instead of finding useful information, she is faced with a lot of advertising:
Marina decides to click on a few links and finds ads promising quick results for very little money.
Having assessed the “attractiveness” of the proposals, Marina decides to report to her boss that everything is quite simple and cheap. The boss, however, reminds her that her friends said that agencies are deceiving, and even for a smaller amount one should not expect serious results. Deciding to continue her search, Marina posts the vacancy on popular employment sites, slightly editing it to suit the needs of her company. Soon a flood of responses begins.
The next day, Marina begins to receive a real influx of calls. She doesn't understand what's going on and complains to her boss. He advises her to write in large letters in the ad: “WORK ONLY IN THE OFFICE FOR FULL DAY!” After this, the calls stop.
A couple of weeks later the situation repeats itself. Marina explains to the boss that no one is calling, and those who are trying to contact are offering remote work.
The boss, disappointed, but understanding that the situation will not change, increases the salary for the vacancy from 40k to “from 40k rubles/month.”
A week later, Marina again resorts to her boss with new responses, and he is already ready to increase her salary to “from 50k rubles/month.”
I told a typical example of how most companies look for SEO specialists. In the previous article “How to get a job as an SEO specialist for 50k/month without work experience,” I already said that SEO is often required “for show.” In most cases, no one even checks the qualifications of candidates, and perhaps at an interview you will meet someone who will tell you how he “promoted the request for recharging phones.” However, in reality, this person may have no real experience, and no one will likely test his competence. I plan to address this issue in a future article.
The main problem is not only that they hire newcomers, but also that management does not understand why an SEO specialist is needed at all. They don’t understand what duties he must perform, what budget is needed for normal work and what prospects he has in the company.
This could all end badly. An SEO specialist, for example, can become a “pupa” who performs strange and ineffective tasks. He may not even have time to gain experience before his site falls under search engine sanctions.
First, you need to do the opposite. You should not raise your rates gradually, expecting that professionals will start contacting you. Immediately set an adequate amount - for example, from 80k rubles per month (for large cities). Secondly, during interviews, be sure to ask candidates about actual experience. Ask for a portfolio with evidence of successful projects and results. Thirdly, it is important to find out the methods of website promotion that the candidate uses. And only after all the evidence has been presented and it is clear to you that the candidate’s methods are suitable, you can hire him on staff, as well as allocate an adequate budget for promotion (links, content, advertising, etc.).
Often during interviews they do not ask for real evidence of experience, and when an SEO specialist gets hired, he is faced with the problem of an insufficient budget, which brings the whole process to naught. The exception is, of course, cases with newcomers, but such vacancies are usually aimed at finding those who are ready to dump prices in order to receive additional income.
