Do it for the people. About SEO for sales on marketplaces

A search engine executive once said that the best way to promote websites is to make them for people. This phrase has become catchphrase and popular among SEO specialists. However, despite this, many continue to look for ways to “trick” search engines in order to quickly get results. While the main goal of SEO is to increase rankings, it is important to remember that the real result is sales. After all, in the end, people buy, not algorithms.

Here is one story from my experience. I was the commercial director of a small company that developed a CRM system. Our site unexpectedly appeared in first place in search results for the query “CRM”, and then held this place for several years. The number of partners who sold our program began to grow, and they began to come to us for training. We showed them our city and often communicated informally. After several meetings, each new partner asked the same question: “What is your SEO budget?”

Each time, my director answered evasively that he could not disclose such information. The partners, surprised, tried to guess how much we spend on SEO, naming their budgets. And, as it turned out, their estimated amounts often exceeded our entire budget. Why? Because at that time the main method of promotion was buying links from other sites, and this really gave results. But we did not have such funds, and we began to look for other ways.

We worked with zero budget for promotion. But we had high-quality, exclusive content that complied with all SEO canons and was well indexed. All elements on our website were thought out to the smallest detail, each button and word performed its own function. There were also links to the site, but they were free. Our partners created high-quality pages about our CRM system using our materials, and naturally, they put links to us.

I didn’t even know then that it was a conversion job. I just thought I was doing the right things by focusing on users. Over time, I learned that this is the basis of successful SEO for sales. After leaving the company, I heard that the site was still bringing in customers even though it had not been updated for many years.

Many people believe that in the 2000s it was easier to achieve success with SEO. At that time it was obvious to me that I was going the right way. In 2006, I purchased a book on SEO, which became a textbook of sorts for me and many others in the industry. This book served as a starting point for many professionals, and the company that published it became the founder of “normal” promotion in our country.

When people asked me how I do SEO, I didn’t hide the answer and passed on this book. A few years later, already in 2013, I found myself in the position of head of the regional branch of this company, and the author of the book signed it for me. And that’s what I understood: “Do it for the people.” It really works.
