I often communicate with potential clients about SEO website promotion. Over the years of work in this field, I have managed to accumulate many useful contacts and earned a good reputation, because word of mouth plays a significant role. Sometimes people come to me with requests that surprise even me.
I recently posted a case study on SEO promotion of a website. I was approached by an entrepreneur who saw this case and decided to hire a specialist to promote his new business. He was selling building materials and wanted to find a professional who understood this niche. We discussed the conditions, I talked about the specifics of work in this area and agreed to start promoting the next month.
However, when the time came to start working, I reminded myself and received an unexpected answer. The person wrote that if a Yandex.Metrica counter is installed on the site and Title and Description are added, then “the site will move itself.”
After that it became clear that we would not work together. But I wondered where this misunderstanding came from. I asked him to explain how the presence of an analytics counter can affect the position of a site, and how he plans to work with semantics, add keywords to “SEO settings” and so on.
The answer was even more surprising:
It also turned out that he had connections with other companies in his industry and was trying to get the name of an SEO specialist from one of those sites. When asked how I ended up with an up-to-date chart from Yandex.Metrica with my contacts, he did not answer.
At the end, he admitted that he had just started a business and did not have a budget for SEO promotion. Apparently this was the real reason for his behavior.
This case once again proves how important it is for business owners to have a basic knowledge of SEO. Whether they're promoting the site themselves or entrusting it to a professional, it's always a good idea to ask the right questions before choosing a professional.
Sometimes I remember this man and wonder if his website was really able to “promote itself”?
