5 stereotypes about SEO specialists

“Search results wizards”, “organic traffic wizards” or “charlatans”. During my work, I have come across many definitions of the SEO profession. Indeed, the role of an SEO specialist is difficult to clearly define, since it combines knowledge in different areas. This includes IT, marketing, linguistics, and even psychology. And if a specialist worked in an advertising agency, then his horizons expand even more.

In this article I would like to debunk several myths and stereotypes that I have encountered, which sometimes led to misunderstandings or even conflicts.

1. The optimizer only provides technical information. assignments.

This stereotype assumes that an SEO specialist only writes technical specifications for developers and cannot perform even a basic task himself. This approach is often found in companies with a separate IT department, where an SEO specialist is perceived as something abstract that does not do real work.

Of course, among SEO specialists you can find those who do not have in-depth knowledge of CSS, but such cases are becoming less and less common. Today, most SEO specialists know how to work with a CMS, layout pages, write styles, and some even write code for websites or work with databases.

In addition, observations show that SEO specialists with skills such as programming, copywriting or JavaScript knowledge have high salary levels.

2. SEO people do nothing all day long, websites grow on their own.

This stereotype is common among top managers who cannot understand why an SEO specialist spends so much time while the site seemingly develops by itself. The problem is that the activities of an SEO specialist are often not visible at first glance. Behind what appears to be inaction is analyzing strategy, researching competitors, fixing errors on a website, or working with search engine algorithms.

If, on the surface, an SEO specialist’s work seems ineffective, then he is most likely busy with tasks such as analytics, content creation, making technical changes, selecting link sites, and researching ways to improve the site.

3. An SEO specialist requires large budgets for the project.

Many people believe that SEO specialists require exorbitant budgets. Yes, optimization requires costs, but this money does not go only to the salary of a specialist. Includes costs for software, copywriting, purchasing links and sometimes purchasing new domains. All of these costs have a reasonable explanation, and the professional should provide projections and justification for each of these costs.

In addition, if an SEO specialist works in an office, he needs a powerful computer to work with large sites and run various programs. In any case, one-time investments in optimization and small monthly costs for website improvements will help speed up the process and achieve better results.

4. In addition to optimization, the specialist must lead the context and/or groups.

Many companies require an SEO specialist to deal with all aspects of online promotion: from contextual advertising to maintaining social networks. But this approach is not always justified. Although SEO specialists can collaborate with other areas of online marketing, trying to force one person to be an expert in all areas will lead to poor quality work.

Some companies have already formed separate teams for various areas of Internet marketing: technical specialists, content specialists, analysts, and so on. This allows us to more effectively and efficiently solve problems in each area.

5. SEO people are gloomy and unsociable.

This stereotype is based on the fact that SEO specialists often work alone and are not involved in corporate life. Of course, the process of analytics and working with large volumes of data can involve a specialist in work, and he may become less sociable for a while, but this does not make him an introvert or an isolated person.

In general, among SEO specialists there are both very sociable and reserved individuals, and it is important to understand that this approach does not depend on the profession. We are all unique, and we should not fit everyone into this stereotype.
