One of the most frequently asked questions among SEO specialists is: how much text does a page need for search engines to rank it adequately? Although at present it is not so much the volume of the text that is important as its quality, this issue remains relevant. It is often asked when it is necessary to draw up technical specifications for a copywriter, for example, to write a guest post. Or if you have an online store with many products and need to figure out how much text to add to describe each one.
For myself, I found a convenient way to solve this problem. Each page of the site has standard content that is repeated on all pages. This could be a navigation menu, sidebar, footer and header. Let's call it “default text”. The main part of the content is the text of the article or description of the product/service.
Rule: the number of words in the content part of the page should be greater than the number of “default text”.
How do I do this?
To quickly count the number of words on a page, I use one of the browser extensions - the word count tool.
Install this extension in your browser, select the desired text, and you will immediately get the word count. For example, on my site there is not that much “default text”: 129 words (footer + sidebar) and 22 words in the header - a total of 151 words.
The content part of the page shown in the screenshot contains 349 words. If this were a description of a product card, I would make it at least 150 words.
I understand that not everyone wants to install additional extensions in the browser, especially if it is already overloaded with various modules. Alternatively, you can use a bookmarklet to count words.
To do this, simply add the link to your bookmarks. Next, having selected the text on the page, just click on this tab to find out the number of words. This is a simple and effective solution.
