In this article we will look at what cloaking is and how it was used for SEO website promotion.
One follower asks: “I often come across the term “cloaking” on SEO forums and see it used in the context of redirects and search engines. Can you explain what this method is, why use it and in what cases it can be useful?
The word "cloak" in English means "mask" or "cover", and the process called cloaking involves replacing one content with another. In SEO, this has often been used as a method to hide certain information from users and search engines.
Cloaking was once a popular SEO method used to promote websites. In one of the periods of my practice, I myself used it actively. For example, when creating doorways (sites aimed exclusively at search engines), the content on the pages was presented differently: text with many keywords was shown for search engines, and normal content for users.
In those days, the use of keywords was one of the main factors that could bring a website to the top. The more keys, the higher the result. Antispam at that time was not as effective as it is now, and with this method it was possible to achieve fairly quick results.
Today, such practices are much less effective, and most likely they will lead to sanctions from search engines.
In the early 2000s, cloaking was one of the most popular techniques for website promotion. It gave excellent results: sites quickly got to the top, since by replacing content it was possible to bypass search engine algorithms.
An example of how this worked: site users saw a product card with a description and a “Buy” button, and search engines saw long texts rich in keywords. This made it possible to quickly promote the page for the target request, even if the keywords were not suitable for regular content.
Such content was shown only to search engines, and users did not see it immediately. This was one of the ways to promote SEO at a time when cloaking was actively used to bypass algorithms.
In addition, cloaking was also used to pass moderation in contextual advertising and targeted advertising on social networks. First, the page was moderated with permitted content, and then, after approval, the content was replaced with that required for advertising purposes. This was especially common in niches where the use of advertising was limited.
Today, cloaking is used extremely rarely in SEO. However, substitution of content depending on the user still occurs, but in a legal form that is allowed by search engines. For example, when a user from one city is shown localized data - such as prices, contacts or delivery conditions, which may differ from the information presented for another city.
In this case, we can talk about the legal use of cloaking, since search engines are not trying to hide something from users, but, on the contrary, are trying to provide them with relevant information. This satisfies the needs of users, and search engines tend to evaluate such actions positively.
For advertising and targeting, cloaking is still used quite actively, but in SEO the method is losing its relevance, because its use can lead to content filtering by search engines. Today, other promotion methods are much more effective.
You can try using text with a lot of keywords, but this is unlikely to yield good results. Modern filters and antispam systems are able to recognize such methods and can punish a site for attempting to manipulate the algorithms.
Some experts still use aggressive linking, but this is not always effective. In some cases, cloaking is used for test projects or to solve minor problems, but its effectiveness today is not as high as it used to be.
We practically do not use cloaking to deceive search engines, and if we use it, it is only as part of tests or experiments. The method is outdated, and now quality content and compliance with all search engine recommendations are much more important.
Cloaking is not a method that should be used to promote a website. It can lead to sanctions, and in the long run it is more harmful than beneficial for your resource.
Even 15-20 years ago, when cloaking was at the peak of its popularity, sites caught manipulating content could be removed from the search engine index, which actually meant a complete ban. It was almost impossible to restore such a site.
