The YKS indicator (site quality index) of Yandex was introduced as a replacement for the old parameter - the Thematic Citation Index (TIC). The TIC showed how many authoritative and thematic sites link to your resource and assessed their quality. This index included both quantitative and qualitative metrics.
Previously, TIC was used to sort sites in the Yandex.Catalog, which was open and accessible to users. Some clients with high TICs had good positions in their section of the catalog, which brought traffic. However, this traffic was often unproductive because it consisted of either competitors analyzing your site or low-probability customers who did not convert into purchases. Despite this, having a high TIC still provided some search engine visibility.
Now, instead of the TIC, Yandex has introduced the ICS, which is a comprehensive assessment of the quality of the site. This is a new approach to measuring the authority of a resource on the Internet.
After the introduction of ICS, there was a lot of speculation and research related to how it works and what parameters affect its value. At first glance, the TIC is very similar to the TIC, and in most cases, sites with a high TIC now also have a high TIC. However, research has shown that there are several factors that can influence changes in indicators. For example, some sites with a high TIC now have a lower TIC, and vice versa, sites with a small TIC may have a higher TIC.
The emergence of ICS is explained by the fact that the calculation of this indicator now takes into account user behavior. This is not just information about how many pages were viewed or what were the failures. Instead, Yandex uses site traffic data, including parameters related to the type of traffic, and possibly the impact of traffic coming from direct requests. The more visited the site, the higher its ICS. Particular attention should be paid to the so-called type-in, when users enter the name of a brand or website domain into a search engine, which signals the popularity of the site.
At the same time, despite all attempts to decipher what exactly influences the ICS, in practice this does not have much significance for promotion. ICS is a kind of information noise that attracts attention, but does not have a significant impact on the actual promotion of sites in search results.
ICS is an indicator that can be useful in some cases. For example, in the past we used TICs to assess the priority of requests when promoting sites. This was especially true when various parameters such as traffic, links and user behavior were added into a single formula. Thus, the ICS will likely be used to prioritize requests and direct efforts to those requests that will be most effective for promotion.
However, in general, ICS is not the most important factor. It does not have a significant impact on SEO, especially in light of the fact that sites are no longer ranked by this indicator in Yandex.Catalog. In essence, ICS is a tool that creates information noise and directs the attention of optimizers to unimportant details, distracting them from more important aspects of SEO.
Instead of worrying about how to increase or decrease your SEO, you should focus on real SEO strategies: improving content, optimizing links, driving quality traffic, branding, and SEO. By working on these aspects, you can achieve more significant results than just keeping an eye on the ICS.
Thus, ICS can be perceived as an additional, but not the main tool for assessing the quality of a website. The main efforts should be directed towards developing the site, improving its content and interaction with users.
