Trends in site development. Monochrome SEO Palette

When a site reaches the first page of search results, this directly increases its traffic, and therefore the potential for sales growth. To achieve high positions, complex optimization is used, combined into the term SEO (Search Engine Optimization). It is important not to confuse SEO with CEO (Chief Executive Officer), who is the head of the company.

The main goal of SEO is to show search engines that your website is of excellent quality. This is achieved through various methods, which can be classified as white, gray and black approaches. There is not always a clear line between the two, as many tactics can manipulate search engines. Some believe that any SEO methods are a form of manipulation and therefore always “black hat”.

Let's look at the different SEO approaches in more detail.

White hat SEO

White hat SEO is the application of optimization techniques that comply with search engine guidelines. In this approach, the emphasis is on improving the internal characteristics of the site, its content and user friendliness.

White hat SEO techniques that you can use safely include:

  • Quality content. These are unique and useful materials that respond to user requests. Balanced use of keywords is also important to keep the text natural and attractive to the reader. It is also important to fill in meta tags correctly, avoiding their excessive use.
  • Working with live catalogs and social networks. Placing links on your website on social networks and other active platforms can significantly increase the authority of the resource. It is important that links are placed organically and voluntarily, for example, if the content was useful to the user.
  • Technical optimization. The site code should be clean and optimized, the structure should be logical, and the loading speed should be fast. This increases the ease of use of the site and, as a result, its position in search results. Particular attention should be paid to the mobile version of the site, ensuring its convenience and fast loading.

Gray SEO

Gray SEO is a cross between white hat and black hat SEO approaches. Such methods may be less expensive, but their effectiveness is difficult to predict and may result in penalties if search engines detect manipulation.

Gray SEO techniques that should be approached with caution include:

  • Excessive use of keywords. Trying to use as many keywords as possible can lead to overspam and poor content quality. This can negatively affect the site’s rankings, since search engines take into account not only the density of keywords, but also the readability of the text.
  • Cheating of behavioral factors. User behavior on a website is an important factor that search engines take into account. To improve behavioral factors, bots are often used to artificially increase the time spent on a site or the number of pages a visitor goes to. However, if this is revealed, the site may be subject to sanctions.
  • Placing links on low-quality resources. This includes registering with dubious directories, posting ads on non-reputable boards, or using low-quality RSS aggregators. Although this can provide quick results, the risks of such methods are significantly high.
  • Manipulations with links. Using links in comments, forums, blogs, or purchasing them are methods that may be perceived by search engines as an artificial attempt to increase the authority of the site.
  • Guest posts. Posting guest content or articles with links to your site is a practice that was once considered acceptable, but can now lead to penalties from search engines.

Black SEO

Black hat SEO is a technique aimed at manipulating search engines and bypassing all their standard filters. This approach is often used for sites of questionable quality, since such methods are not needed for high-quality resources. Black hat SEO can bring quick results, but it always comes with a lot of risk.

Black Hat SEO Techniques to Avoid:

  • Doorways. These are low-quality sites that are created solely to get to the top of search engines and then redirect users to targeted resources. Such sites often use automatically generated texts with a high keyword density.
  • Cloaking. This method involves creating different versions of the content - one for users and another for search engines. This misleads search engines, since the robot sees optimized content, but the user sees different content. If the search engine detects this, the site will be penalized.
  • Automatic content generation. Black SEO does not care about the quality of materials; it often uses automatic creation of texts that are almost impossible to read due to their meaninglessness. It could be just a series of random phrases or invisible text and links.
  • Hacking sites. Some black SEO specialists resort to hacking popular sites in order to install hidden links leading to the promoted resource.
  • Mass spam. Posting comments, messages and links on forums, social networks and other resources may provide short-term results, but this is considered a violation of search engine policies.
  • Automatic creation of multiple materials. Using satellite networks, linking blogs, or creating multiple PDF documents and videos are hallmarks of black hat SEO.

The lines between black, white and gray SEO are not always clear. Techniques that are considered “white hat” today may become “gray” or even “black hat” over time, depending on changes in search engine algorithms. It is important to keep up with new updates and SEO trends.
