SEO tips for copywriters. Interview with Vladislava Rykova

Copywriters who have left freelance exchanges should pay attention to the method of finding customers directly. Search engine promotion of websites is an excellent option, which still remains not so popular among copywriters, and therefore competition in search results is relatively low.

Vlada, the first question will help beginning copywriters. Is it possible for a beginner to understand SEO and work on promoting his own website or blog on his own? Or is it still worth turning to specialists for help? Tell us about your experience: did you start with copywriting or SEO optimization?

I started out in copywriting, then moved into SEO, and now I'm doing marketing. I explain this by saying that marketing cannot be imagined without competent search engine optimization and the creation of quality content.

As for the questions of beginners, I will say that understanding SEO and understanding the basic principles of website promotion is not at all difficult. These principles have not changed since the first search engine appeared, and they are enough to avoid being sanctioned by search engines with minimal effort. However, if a copywriter does not plan to do SEO, it is better for him to focus on writing texts and not delve into the daily changes in search engine algorithms. Basic knowledge will help you establish interaction with developers to avoid possible problems. In other cases, it is better to contact specialists. Everyone should do what they do best: a designer with design, a programmer with programming, and a copywriter with texts.

The second question concerns my personal experience. When I created my blog, I did not know what requirements search engines have for a site, and as a result, my site fell under the filter. What can be done at the initial stage to avoid such mistakes? Maybe you can suggest some useful materials or tips on this matter?

It's actually quite simple! In order to avoid being sanctioned by search engines from the very beginning, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the recommendations from the search engines themselves. For example, Yandex provides tips on creating websites, and Google provides a guide to search engine optimization for beginners. Read these materials and you can avoid common mistakes.

I will list a few standard problems that are often found on unoptimized sites:

  • Lots of outgoing links without closing them with the “nofollow” tag;
  • Duplication of meta tags (title, description) or their absence, especially on pages of categories and tags;
  • Incorrectly configured robots.txt (in this case it is better to contact a specialist);
  • Lack of sitemap.xml;
  • Lack of analytics and the site has not been added to webmaster tools;
  • Duplicate content, especially if the site has article previews;
  • Unoptimized images: missing alt attributes, incorrect file names, unprepared for web files;
  • Lack of internal linking;
  • Lack of control over broken links;
  • Lack of buttons for socialization (social network buttons).

Today, many copywriters run their own blogs, but often do not pay enough attention to promotion in search engines. Your site is consistently in the tops of Yandex and Google. What steps do you take to maintain your position, and what would you recommend to newbies to achieve such results?

Now I am actively working on improving the semantic core and internal optimization. My blog has already existed for three years, and I was exclusively engaged in internal optimization, and also actively used social networks for promotion. I did not purposefully increase the external link mass, since Yandex has recently significantly reduced the influence of external links on site rankings.

Here are some methods that can help in acquiring free backlinks:

  • Guest Blogging;
  • Registration in white trust directories;
  • Write reviews of books and events that other sites will want to link to;
  • Develop partnerships with sites on related topics.

What other promotion methods are suitable for copywriters, besides SEO?

It is important to promote not only the site, but also your name. Your name is your brand, and you can use a variety of marketing methods to promote it. Especially for copywriters who often do not have large budgets, the following methods are suitable:

  • Promotion on social networks (for example, LinkedIn);
  • Guest Blogging;
  • Networking – attending conferences and meetings where you can find potential clients;
  • Email newsletter (you can rent or buy databases);
  • Active participation in discussions on forums and blogs (it is important to avoid spam);
  • Publication of high-quality analytical articles on specialized websites or in magazines;
  • Acting as an information sponsor at events;
  • Partner with other professionals, such as SEO experts, to exchange clients.

How do you rate the use of social media to promote copywriting? And which platforms do you think are most suitable?

Not every business is suitable for social media marketing, but if you operate in an international market, then LinkedIn is the best platform. For local markets, for example, Ukraine and Russia, VKontakte and Facebook will be effective. Create your own groups and pages and actively develop them.

The main thing is to remember that social networks are created for communication, not for advertising. The best way to promote is through active participation in discussions, likes, reposts and private messages.

What to do if a copywriter’s blog does not attract visitors and there are no active discussions on it?

You can't rely on just one traffic source. To make the site “live”, it is important to combine the following methods:

  • SEO to attract traffic from search engines;
  • SMM to stimulate comments and engage in discussions;
  • Linkbuilding to get links from other sites;
  • Email marketing to distribute quality content.

It's never too late to start developing your newsletter. Even if you only have a few subscribers, creating an email newsletter will only benefit you. This will help build a loyal audience from the very beginning.

Some parting words for beginning copywriters:

  • Time is the most important resource, learn to use it correctly;
  • Read classical literature, it helps to develop;
  • Don’t skimp on learning, it’s an investment in the future;
  • Make useful connections;
  • Don't forget that modesty can lead to poverty and obscurity.
