Lesson 1.1 – Search engine. URL. Search demand. Search results. SEO share in Yandex and Google search results.

In this lesson we will look at the key terms that are used in the process of website promotion in search engines.

Search engine is an algorithm that helps users find the information they need on the Internet. It processes queries and provides results that best match users' needs. At the moment, the main search engines are Yandex and Google. Yandex is widespread in Russia and Russian-speaking countries, and Google is a global system covering all countries of the world.

CEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of optimizing a website to improve its position in search results. SEO includes working with the internal structure of a website, its content, link mass and other factors that affect a website's ranking in search engines.

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is a unique resource address on the Internet that points to a specific page on the site. The URL consists of three parts:

  • Protocol (for example, http:// is an unsecured protocol, or https:// is a secure data transfer protocol),
  • Domain name,
  • Page addresses.

The URL of the site's home page consists of only the first two parts. The page address may include additional parameters (GET parameters) if the site does not use the correct address structure.

Search demand is the number of queries that users enter into a search engine. This metric can be measured by day, week, or month, but typically uses monthly request volume. To assess search demand, you can use special tools, such as Yandex Wordstat, which allow you not only to determine the volume of requests, but also to predict demand for the coming months, as well as analyze the history of requests over several years.

Search results is a list of results that a search engine displays to a user in response to their query. It consists of links to pages that most closely match the query.

Yandex search results are divided into several blocks:

  • The first 5 positions are advertising links placed through Yandex Direct.
  • The next 10 positions are SEO results, that is, sites that Yandex considers most relevant to the user’s request.
  • The last 4-5 positions are additional advertising through Yandex Direct.

Also, Yandex search results may contain special blocks, such as product offers from Yandex Market, quick answers to questions, Yandex Maps and other special blocks.

Google search results in Russia do not include advertising units and consist entirely of sites that, according to Google algorithms, best match the user's request (SEO). Google may also display special blocks, such as Google Maps and FAQs.
