Freelancing in SEO. How to set a price for your work

Many beginning freelancers are faced with the question: how to set the right price for their work? There is no clear answer to this question, and in this text I will share my thoughts on this matter.

Calculation formula based on your average current salary and hours of work

For example, if your current salary is 80,000 per month, and you have an 8-hour working day and a 5-day working week (about 20 working days per month), your hour of work costs about 500 rubles (80,000 / 20 * 8 = 500 rubles).

Next, you create a work plan for the month, calculating the number of hours needed to complete each task.

An example estimate might look like this:

You can also add costs for various services to the table if the client agrees to pay for them. For example, services for tracking positions.

After you calculate the cost of all the work, evaluate how your workload corresponds to the planned volume. And based on this, decide whether this price is right for you.

Other ways to calculate cost

You can also explore vacancies on popular job search platforms, such as hh.ru, and compare employer requirements with your competencies. This will give you insight into how agencies evaluate the work of SEO specialists.

In addition, it will be useful to follow specialized telegram channels with vacancies and SEO resumes. They often publish information about the cost of an hour of work or the cost of running projects for SEO specialists.

Just thoughts on the topic

Many freelancers feel unsure when starting out when it comes to offering their price. A doubt arises: what if the client does not agree? Or, on the contrary, you asked for too low an amount and could have received more. There are two options here: either take a risk and offer a high price, or start with a small price and feel more confident.

Why not bargain? It is unlikely that anyone will be against negotiations on the cost. For example, you offered a large amount, the client is not ready to pay that much, and then you can ask him to name the price - there is nothing wrong with that.

For me personally, as a person with uncertainty, it was not obvious for a long time that it was possible to bargain and offer a higher price. And many of my friends face the same problems.

In fact, freelancing is often not only about skills, but also about luck and communication. It happens that acquaintances tell how they found a large client, despite the lack of experience in SEO. They received a handsome salary without doing anything special, and at the same time they were new to the field.

There is another situation - you find clients, but they pay little, for example, 5,000-10,000 rubles per month, and you have to spend a lot of time and effort. But all this is due to the fact that there is no confidence to offer a higher price, and losing a client is also scary.

Sometimes earning money depends not only on your professional SEO skills, but also on your self-confidence and ability to sell your services.

Your income may also depend on how willing you are to take risks and negotiate. If you have financial confidence, you can afford to ask for more without fear of rejection.

On the other hand, it also happens that you are extremely busy, and a new client writes to you. You don't want to work with him, but you offer a very high price so that he refuses. But what’s surprising is that he agrees.

Earnings also depend on what work plan you drew up and what errors you found on the client’s website. The more accurate and reasonable your plan, the more likely you are to get a good payment.

Don't forget that your download matters too. For example, if you have several regular clients and you are confident that you can cope with their tasks, then you can agree to less profitable projects so as not to be left without work.

All this suggests that there is always room for negotiations.

Often clients themselves are interested in your prices, and then you name the price based on your workload and confidence.

In the end, this is very similar to the interview process, where you are first offered your terms and then you voice your expectations.

These are the thoughts I had about this.

I would be glad to hear your comments: how do you set the price for your work? What fears are associated with this for you?
