Common mistakes in SEO website promotion that you will regret!

During numerous SEO audits of websites, we discovered many common mistakes that negatively affect promotion and reduce rankings in search results. Today we will look at the main ones and give tips on how to avoid them.

Study these errors and check if they occur on your site. If you find any of them, you should take immediate action to correct them.

1. Site pages are not indexed

Indexing is the process by which search engines find pages on a website and add them to their index. Without indexing, pages will not appear in search results, and users will only be able to get to them through a direct link.

If many pages on your site are not indexed, this will result in a loss of potential traffic. It is important that the search engine index contains at least 90% of the pages of a regular website and 70% of the pages of an online store.

If you find problems with indexing, submit pages for indexing through search engine webmaster tools. For mass indexing, you can use special services, for example, API for indexing.

2. Presence of duplicate pages

Duplicate content on website pages is one of the most common mistakes. This may be due to incorrect CMS configuration or different URL variations for the same page (for example, with and without a trailing slash).

Search engines can get confused due to duplicates, which negatively affects the site's position. To resolve this issue, you can:

  • Remove duplicates from CMS;
  • Hide duplicates from indexing using the robots.txt file.

3. Tags are not optimized

Tags are important page elements that appear in the code but are not visible to the user. The most important are the Title and Description tags, which are shown in search results. These tags must be properly optimized so that search engines can understand exactly what the page is about.

The optimal tag should be:

  • 50-100 characters long for Title and 150-270 characters for Description;
  • Include keywords that are used to search for your site.

Be sure to optimize meta tags on all pages on your site that need to be indexed.

4. The H1 header is not specified or does not exist

The H1 heading is the main heading of the page and should clearly reflect its content. It is important for SEO because search robots pay attention to keywords in the title, which affects the page's position in search results.

There should only be one H1 header per page to avoid confusion in search results. If there are several of them, this can lead to search engines misperceiving the site structure.

5. The site does not have an SSL certificate installed

An SSL certificate is required to ensure the security of the site. It allows you to encrypt data that is transferred between the user and the site, and warns about potential risks. Without an SSL certificate, sites receive the “not secure” status in browsers, which can discourage users and lower their rankings in search results.

Additionally, search engines like Google use SSL as one of their ranking factors, making it mandatory for most websites.
