Checklist for SEO promotion

Many users strive to independently promote their website, but are faced with many commercial offers and general recommendations without deep specifics. We have prepared a detailed checklist for SEO promotion to help you effectively improve your website's position in search engines.

Robots and sitemap files

The first step in the promotion process is to properly configure the robots.txt file. This is a file with which search engines work, where directives are written for blocking or allowing indexing of various pages and sections of the site. Errors in this file can result in the entire site being blocked from search engines.

Typically, the robots.txt file is used to exclude pages such as /feedback, /basket, /registration, and the like from indexing. There is no need to specify the pages that should be opened - by default, everything that is not closed by the disallow directive is considered accessible to search engines. It is also important to indicate the main mirror of the site and the path to the site map.

A sitemap is usually located at domain.ru/sitemap.xml and helps search engines quickly update information about innovations or deleted pages. In addition, the site map helps improve internal linking.

Webmaster and analytics panels

Before starting to work with the site, it is important to configure the webmaster panels for Yandex and Google Search Console. These tools allow you to track information about the health of the site from the point of view of search engines. During the promotion process, the optimizer will regularly check these panels to analyze the response of search engines to changes on the site.

Analytics systems such as Yandex Metrica and Google Analytics are necessary to track traffic, user behavior and conversion. Understanding how visitors interact with your site will help you optimize your pages and increase conversions, such as placing an order or filling out a form.

If webmaster panels and analytics systems have not yet been installed, they must be connected as soon as possible by adding the required code fragments to the site.

Meta tag optimization

Meta tags are important elements that help search engines understand the content of a page. Meta tags help the optimizer indicate which keywords should be promoted, and also describe the page, which is important for search results snippets.

Basic meta tags:

  • Title (page title) is the main title that is displayed in search results and in the browser. It is recommended to limit yourself to 70 characters, ideally inserting one key query at the beginning into the title. The title must be unique for each page and correctly composed, without listing requests.
  • Description (page description) - is displayed in snippets and represents a summary of the page. The description text should be around 150–200 characters, include key queries and explain what users will find on the page.
  • Keywords (key queries) - although search engines practically do not take this tag into account, it should be filled sparingly, no more than 2-3 keywords per page.
  • Other meta tags, such as alt, second description, and others, have minimal impact on SEO.

Duplicates and affiliations

It is very important that your website is unique in the eyes of search engines. The presence of duplicate sites or pages can lead to domain merging. This often happens when a website is developed on a temporary domain, which is then forgotten to be excluded from indexing, which leads to merging with the main domain.

A similar problem occurs with URLs that differ by even one character. For example, www.domain.ru and http://domain.ru for search engines are two different sites. To avoid duplicates, you need to configure a 301 redirect so that there is only one URL option in the index.

404 errors and broken links

Search engines have an extremely negative attitude towards broken links, which can negatively affect the site's ranking. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all hyperlinks to pages are up-to-date and that URLs do not change without a redirect.

If the page no longer exists, users should be shown a 404 error page indicating that the URL is invalid or the page has been removed.

Drawing up CNC

Human-readable URL (HURL) is the address of a page that clearly reflects its content. Using CNC results in a better experience for both users and search engines. Although there is no requirement to use CNC, its implementation often leads to improved search rankings.

An example of a correct CNC: “domain.ru/uslugi/prodvijenie-saita-v-top”.

Adaptability and validity

When the main tasks are completed, you should pay attention to the adaptability and validity of the site.

Adaptability is necessary for the correct display of the site on mobile devices, without horizontal scrolling and with the correct alignment of blocks. This is important not only for users, but also for search engines; for example, Google takes into account mobile responsiveness when ranking sites.

The validity of the site is also important, since errors in the code can affect the perception of the site by search engines. While it is virtually impossible for a website to be completely error-free, it is important to minimize the number of critical issues by using appropriate tools to check validity.

Page content

If the site already has content, it is important to check the uniqueness of the texts and the absence of spam. It is also worth checking pages for “wateriness” - too frequent use of simple and general words. After checking the content, a technical specification is drawn up for a copywriter who will work on improving the texts.

Going through the checklist

Many points in the website development process can be recommendations, but for SEO they are mandatory. Each element of the checklist affects the final result.
